Petrichor is partnering with LaLiga and FUNDACIÓN LaLiga to make a massive contribution to women’s football in Cameroon by creating a new youth league for U13 and U15 girls. The league will run from February to May 2022 under the name “La Ligue D’Égalité” to provide opportunities for nearly 200 girls to play in a competitive and dynamic format, while developing football talent, teamwork, and character.
This collaboration with La Liga and Foundación La Liga also includes seminars and training developed by La Liga for more than 30 women’s coaches, representing investment into the women’s football infrastructure in Cameroon for both coaches and players. Many coaches in Cameroon do not have many opportunities for professional development, especially for women’s football, making this a special opportunity for those who can participate.
Five Petrichor teams (Green City, Regina FA, Social du Mbam, T7 and Petrichor Elite) will make up the league at both U13 and U15 age brackets. It represents an expansion from the previous U15 girls league that Petrichor launched in the 2020/2021season, offering opportunities for more players and coaches to be involved. La Liga will be supporting the league with equipment, logistics, and media.
Trésor Penku, Delegate of La Liga in Central Africa, spoke about the partnership, saying "This is an excellent initiative and a big step forward for women's football in Cameroon. LaLiga is firmly committed to giving back to society what society has given us and this is one of those projects that we are particularly proud to launch, as it paves the way for equal opportunities in the development of football for boys and girls. Training sessions for local coaches, mostly women, make this project very complete. In this way, many women who want to pursue a career as professional trainers will have access to top-level content. We are convinced that this is the beginning of a great journey for women's football in Cameroon.”
